Objective
AI is transforming space science at an accelerating pace, yet significant capacity gaps persist across EU Member States. Poland, recognized by EIS 2025 as an Emerging Innovator has only 8.4% of enterprises using AI compared to the 20% EU average. CBK PAN (Space Research Centre, Polish Academy of Sciences) identified 38 AI/ML use cases across six departments through an institute-wide survey, spanning techniques from deep learning for satellite image analysis to physics-informed neural networks for instrument calibration. AI-SPACE addresses this structural gap through a 36-month Twinning with three centres of excellence: TRACASA (ES), JOANNEUM RESEARCH (AT), and ETH Zurich (CH), combining complementary expertise in Earth Observation, planetary science, AI research, and technology transfer. The project pursues six objectives:
• strengthen AI/ML research excellence through joint research along two thematic lines - Geo-AI (agriculture, land cover, wildfires, climate records) and Planetary-AI (Mars/Moon data fusion, instrument calibration);
• build institutional capacity for AI-driven space mission support;
• enhance AI research management and strategic planning;
• establish sustainable collaboration frameworks with partners and stakeholders;
• increase staff mobility;
• raise CBK PAN's international visibility.
The methodology follows a learning-by-doing approach: researchers acquire AI skills by working on real EO and planetary challenges during staff visits, thematic workshops, summer schools, and a research management programme. The proposed target outcomes of the project: 10+ joint publications, 30% of CBK PAN researchers trained, AI tools implementation in 3+ departments, and at least 4 follow-up proposals to HE/ESA utilizing newly acquired AI knowledge - will ensure long lasting institutional transformation toward research excellence and research sustainability, with a significant impact on Polish and European competitiveness in EO, space science and missions

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
