From Molecules to Sustainable Materials: Multiscale Insight into Functionalized Interfaces and Bioinspired Soft Matter

Objective

M2M-MIFIS will transform VSCHT from a strong but still fragmented research environment into an internationally connected centre for predictive functional materials research. The project addresses a central challenge in modern materials science: linking molecular-level mechanisms with macroscopic functionality under realistic operating conditions. It will integrate multiscale modelling, quantum chemistry, thermodynamics, X-ray and optical spectroscopies, and scattering methods into a single experimental–theoretical framework capable of explaining structure–function relationships in complex molecular systems. Scientific work will focus on soft matter and biointerfaces, intrinsically disordered proteins, and metal-containing functional systems, including catalytic and photoredox materials, with explicit treatment of interfaces, solvent effects, pH, temperature, and external stimuli.
As a Twinning action, M2M-MIFIS goes beyond joint research. Through staff exchanges, training, mentoring, hands-on participation in beamtime campaigns, and structured access to major European research infrastructures, it will strengthen VSCHT competitiveness at the European level and embed its researchers in long-term scientific networks. The project will also build institutional capacity in proposal development, project management, open science and FAIR data practices, inclusive research support, and strategic communication. A dedicated innovation dimension will introduce entrepreneurship training, research valorisation tools, and structured pathways for identifying and supporting research-based innovation. By combining scientific excellence with capacity building, international networking, and innovation support, M2M-MIFIS will create a durable impact on VSCHT research performance, visibility, and ability to participate in and lead competitive European collaborations.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
