Objective
CaSCaDES is a Horizon Europe WIDERA Twinning project designed to simultaneously strengthen the scientific excellence and institutional research-management capacity of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology (FCET). While FCET demonstrates strong scientific output, it has never coordinated a Horizon Europe project and scores low on research‑management maturity across 5 core domains. Structural gaps in open science, FAIR data, IP management, Horizon proposal development and science communication remain key barriers to FCET's full ERA participation. To address these gaps, CaSCaDES links FCET with 7 advanced European partners (CSIC, DTU, UGOE, UAM, UT, PROZO, SUSMOM) spanning the full biocatalytic value chain, from enzyme discovery, computational design and structural biology to high‑throughput screening, process integration and sustainability assessment. The joint scientific programme focuses on a two‑step biocatalytic cascade for the synthesis of non‑canonical amino acids, serving as both an ambitious research platform and a structured vehicle for excellence transfer and hands-on training. Capacity building is delivered through mobility, embedded expert visits, intensive courses, workshops, mentoring and job‑shadowing, covering scientific and transversal competences including IP management, innovation and Horizon proposal writing. Institutionally, the project introduces robust governance, a digital collaboration tool and standardized practices for research support. A faculty-level advisory committee, endorsed by FCET management and composed of project‑trained staff, will sustain these practices beyond the project lifetime. The CaSCaDES measures will position FCET as a credible Horizon coordinator, broaden institutional engagement and embed a culture of open, strategically managed research into the faculty’s long-term development.
