Sustainable Ultra-miniaturized Radiation Verification System for Oncology and Radiotherapy

Objective

Brachytherapy is one of the most precise radiotherapy modalities, but also one of the most verification-critical, since millimetre-scale positional deviations or dose errors of 5–10% may already be clinically unacceptable. Yet delivered dose is still verified mainly through treatment planning and procedural quality assurance rather than by direct spatial measurement. SURVIVOR addresses this gap by developing a distributed brachytherapy dosimetry platform based on ultra-miniaturised spintronic detector elements with passive dose-memory functionality.
The project will test whether radiation-induced resistance changes in high-Z-assisted spintronic multilayers can be used to encode, retain, and read out absorbed dose under clinically relevant HDR and LDR conditions. Through detector concept definition, prototype fabrication, calibration, array integration, and phantom-based validation, SURVIVOR will establish whether this architecture can enable distributed delivered-dose verification beyond isolated point dosimetry. Implemented as an interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral MSCA Staff Exchanges action, the project brings together universities, RTOs, and SMEs to integrate expertise in detector design, fabrication, radiation-response modelling, electronics, and medical-physics validation. The expected outcome is a laboratory-validated TRL4 proof of concept together with durable collaborative capacity and transferable technical know-how.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
