Multiscale Mechanics of Advanced Materials under Hypervelocity Impact

Objective

HYPERMECH is an intercontinental, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral research network addressing a long-standing challenge at the interface of Materials Science, Mechanics, Shock Physics, and Thermodynamics: understanding and predicting the response of refractory metals under hypervelocity impact. At loading speeds in the kilometer-per-second regime, materials are driven into extreme thermomechanical states in which shock waves, large deformations, damage, fragmentation, and phase transformations are governed by tightly coupled processes spanning multiple length and time scales. Despite decades of research, a unified and predictive multiscale description of these phenomena remains elusive. The limited understanding of hypervelocity impact is rooted in a combination of scientific and structural constraints. Experimentally, reproducing and diagnosing hypervelocity conditions requires (i) highly specialized launch systems, (ii) ultra-fast diagnostics, and (iii) advanced in-situ characterization techniques, which until recently have been scarce. Historically, a significant fraction of hypervelocity research has been driven by defense and security applications, with experimental data and modelling approaches often remaining classified. The intrinsic multiscale and multiphysics nature of the problem has traditionally exceeded the scope of single-institution. HYPERMECH assembles a consortium of 14 universities and 4 research centers across 8 countries in Europe and America, whose combined expertise / infrastructure goes beyond the capabilities of any individual organization. The project will deliver fundamental advances in understanding the response of refractory metals under extreme loadings, relevant to applications in civil protection, aerospace structures, and transportation industry, aligning with Horizon Europe clusters (iii) Civil Security for Society, (iv) Digital, Industry and Space, and (v) Climate, Energy and Mobility.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
