Objective
Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading cause of neonatal and infant mortality in Europe and worldwide, particularly among extremely premature infants, and remains a major clinical challenge. Affecting 5–10% of live births in Europe, it generates substantial economic costs and places significant emotional and social burdens on families.
PREBIS aims to address these challenges by advancing understanding of PTB physiological mechanisms and triggers, identifying and validating novel biomarkers, and developing improved diagnostic and prevention strategies. Adopting a multicentric, data-driven, and user-centred approach, the project seeks to reduce PTB incidence and/or prolong gestation, enabling preventive, personalised, and cost-effective care, while strengthening Europe’s leadership in advanced healthcare systems.
A key innovation is the development of the first uterine digital twin to enhance understanding of uterine physiology and PTB onset. PREBIS will also advance early screening through reliable biomarkers and AI-driven prediction models integrating uterocervical and placental status, enabling earlier and more accurate interventions.
In parallel, the project will pioneer an integrated framework for tocolytic drug optimisation via pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modelling, and assess innovative therapies (probiotic, cell-based, and antibiotic) targeting infection- and inflammation-driven pathways. These approaches aim to support more personalised obstetric care and reduce PTB-related morbidity and mortality.
The PREBIS consortium comprises 22 organisations from 13 countries across academia, hospitals, and industry. Strong emphasis is placed on knowledge transfer and capacity building through interdisciplinary training and intersectoral secondments, fostering collaboration and supporting the career development of research and clinical staff, while strengthening long-term European research and innovation capacity.
