Maritorium: Rethinking Coastal and Marine Governance through Adaptive Design, Digital Tools and Staff Exchange

Objective

Coastal and marine territories are increasingly affected by climate change impacts such as sea level rise, erosion and ecosystem stress, while simultaneously facing pressures from energy transition, tourism and urban development. Prevailing governance and planning frameworks rely on fixed boundaries, sectoral logics and static data, reducing their capacity to respond to dynamic land–sea interactions and long term uncertainty.
MARITORIUM addresses this challenge by rethinking coastal and marine governance through a collaborative research and innovation framework that integrates adaptive design approaches, digital tools and international staff exchange. Architecture operates as a mediating interface connecting environmental dynamics, digital analysis and institutional decision making across scales.
Building on the state of the art in coastal governance and spatial planning, MARITORIUM combines advances in digital technologies, artificial intelligence and environmental sciences with community based knowledge. International and intersectoral staff exchanges link academic institutions, public authorities and civil society organisations in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, enabling bidirectional transfer of methods and practices in real working environments.
The project pursues four objectives: to develop the maritorium as an operational framework for climate affected coastal and marine territories; to generate comparative territorial analyses using innovative spatial representations and digital tools; to co design and validate adaptive governance instruments that support learning over time; and to enhance skills and employability through targeted training and researcher mobility.
By embedding research within secondments and collaborative practice, MARITORIUM delivers transferable tools and methodologies that remain within participating organisations beyond the project duration, while supporting more resilient governance of coastal and marine territories today.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
