Human-Centric Robotics & Digital Upskilling for Europe’s Agricultural Workforce

Objective

AGRIWORK addresses a critical bottleneck in the digital and green transition of European agriculture: the lack of a workforce capable of effectively adopting and operating advanced technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and data-driven decision-support systems. Despite rapid technological progress, large-scale deployment remains limited due to skills gaps, fragmented training approaches, and low adoption readiness across agricultural value chains. The project adopts a human-centric approach to agricultural innovation by integrating workforce development with technological advancement. AGRIWORK will develop an integrated framework combining workforce skills mapping, technology adoption modelling, AI-assisted adaptive training platforms, and immersive extended reality (XR) training environments. These components will enable agricultural workers to safely and efficiently interact with robotic systems and digital tools in real operational contexts. The framework will be validated through Living Lab pilots in representative agricultural sectors, including greenhouse horticulture and Mediterranean perennial crops, ensuring strong alignment with real-world conditions. Through international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary staff exchanges, AGRIWORK will facilitate knowledge transfer between research institutions, technology providers and agricultural stakeholders. By bridging the gap between innovation and workforce capability, AGRIWORK will enhance productivity, improve working conditions and accelerate the adoption of digital technologies, contributing to a more resilient, competitive and sustainable European agri-food sector.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
