A Deeper Dive into Advancing Genomic Sensor Devices for Environmental monitoring

Objective

Most diagnostic systems on the market are designed for use in well-funded laboratories with dedicated personnel that operate in
regulated environments. A major challenge for biological safety engineering is to develop diagnostic tests that meet the needs of all
the world's people. In advancing the state-of-the-art in molecular diagnostics, DNA DIVE aims to adopt bottom-up principles to
develop novel, cost-effective, reliable, robust platform technologies that can be adapted for many different target diseases, genes,
and pathogens that commonly affect food and water security
DNA DIVE will transform scientific concepts into innovative and high value sensing platforms for food and water security applications.
The project will exploit our research expertise in novel DNA synthesis strategies, nanoparticle integration with DNA nanostructures,
interfacial fluidic engineering and optical systems to take a deep dive into the development of high value electrochemical and optical
DNA diagnostic systems.
We will exploit the use of DNA in two manners. First as the genetic target of sensing platforms that provide detailed information of
the specific pathogen that may contaminate our food and water supply chains. Second, we will utilise DNA as a versatile nanoscale
material that can be manipulated (e.g. DNA origami) and functionalised to provide advanced sensing structures and interconnects;
DNA-hybrids. The key research objectives are:
To develop and expand the range of novel DNA-based components that allow for facile functionalization with nanoparticles,
electrode surfaces and optical fibres (WP1)
To take the components developed in WP1 and assemble functional optoelectronic materials that exhibit superlative recognition
properties (WP2)
To demonstrate the electrochemical and optical detection of targeted water and food contaminants within microfluidic units (WP3).
To embedd the DNA-hybrid components and fluid management systems into optical a

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
