Visions of the Past: Visual Archives and the History of Archaeology

Objective

VISIONS of the Past: Visual Archive and the History of Archaeology is an international and interdisciplinary research and staff exchange project that develops a new approach to history of archaeology through the study of visual archives, including photographs, drawings, films and other visual records. Although archaeology is one of the most visually documented scientific practices, these materials have rarely been analysed as historical sources in their own right. VISIONS addresses this gap by examining visual archives as constitutive components in the production, circulation and interpretation of archaeological knowledge, and as sites where epistemic, social and institutional processes intersect. The project is structured around three objectives: First, it analyses visual archives to reconstruct the historical development of archaeological practice, focusing on how fieldwork, sites and knowledge production have been recorded, standardised and disseminated. Second, it investigates regimes of visibility and invisibility within these archives, examining overlooked actors—including women, technicians and local labourers—and how gender, status and ethnicity are represented or omitted. Third, it applies feminist and intersectional approaches to assess how visual documentation reflects broader social and historical inequalities within the discipline. VISIONS brings together universities, museums, archives and heritage organisations, combining academic and professional expertise. Through MSCA Staff Exchanges, participants collaborate via international and intersectoral secondments, working with archival collections while developing shared methods and tools. Activities include research, training, workshops and co-production of publications, exhibitions and digital resources. The project strengthens research capacity, enhances knowledge exchange and establishes innovative frameworks for the visual and intersectional history of archaeology in line with MSCA objectives.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
