Objective
The proposed project, “C4EtOH”, will develop, and sustain long-term collaborations between Europe, China, South Africa and Tanzania to advance sustainable ethanol production from CO2. This objective will be achieved through joint research on AI-enabled new process systems and material development for direct air capture and utilisation system. This requires interdisciplinary skills and knowledge in experimental studies, process modelling, analysis and optimisation, computational material design and catalysis and machine learning, which will be strengthened by structured researcher mobility between Europe and the participating partner countries. C4EtOH brings together 14 world-leading partners, including 4 industrial partners. The project is planned to start in March 2027 for 48 months. It will involve 37 experienced researchers and 39 early-stage researchers, who will participate in 360 person-months of secondments. A total budget of about €1.4 million is requested to support these exchange activities. The European partners contribute leading expertise in solvent-based DAC, process modelling, integration, intensification, optimisation, computational materials design, machine learning, Digital Twins, and life cycle analysis, while Chinese partners bring strengths in catalysis for CO2 utilisation, electrocatalysis for green hydrogen production, and techno-economic analysis. South African and Tanzanian partners provide expertise in solvent/adsorbent synthesis, renewable energy modelling, and social-economic assessments. Knowledge transfer and capacity building will be facilitated through well-structured secondments, complemented by training and network activities. We will generate at least 35 peer-reviewed journal publications and 35 conference papers. In addition, 6 Workshops, 6 training courses, 3 industry-focused events and 1 IChemE webinar will be organised to maximise dissemination and impact.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
