Molecular Science Against Falsified Drugs and Drug Hazards

Objective

SAFE-DADA proposes a comprehensive strategy for identifying falsified and substandard medicines by leveraging Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) techniques. This approach transcends conventional methods
that focus primarily on the composition and structure of pharmaceutical products, aiming instead at the innovative concept to characterize molecular dynamics and detect even subtle variations in molecular arrangement and interactions. In parallel, the project
seeks to reveal and exploit synergies among a broad spectrum of complementary analytical techniques, including Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Photochemistry, Vibrational spectroscopy, Broadband Acoustic Resonance Dissolution Spectroscopy, and Isotope
Ratio Mass Spectrometry, to integrate their strengths against the increasingly sophisticated routes of drug falsification. The ultimate concept rests on two complementary pillars, NMR-based and non-NMR methods, together to develop fast, reliable, and portable
strategies for drug authentication. These objectives bring together experts from academia and industry, encompassing multidisciplinary expertise in physics, chemistry, pharmacology, life sciences, and engineering. The concerted effort spans not only a diverse range of molecular science approaches but also a broad array of pharmaceutical products, including antibiotics, oncological, antimicrobial, and antimalarial drugs, as well as antihistamines, antitussives, and herbal medicines. The project also emphasizes knowledge exchange, offering extensive training for early-career researchers, not only to become experts in pharmaceutical analysis and drug authentication, but also to develop the unique ability to integrate and exploit synergies among diverse molecular science methods for a wide range of applications. Furthermore, SAFE-DADA raises public awareness, highlighting the scale and dangers of drug falsification.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
