Objective
European cultural heritage (CH) institutions face a paradox: while audiences are more diverse than ever—ranging from local communities to intercontinental tourists, from experts to occasional visitors—the dominant digital mediation models remain largely “one-size-fits-all.” In an attention economy shaped by fast-paced social media, such uniform narratives struggle to remain meaningful, inclusive and engaging.
This project addresses the societal challenge of making CH experiences simultaneously personalised, scientifically rigorous and ethically accountable. It explores how Generative AI (GenAI), Extended Reality (XR) and Digital Twins (DT) can enable adaptive cultural storytelling that responds to visitors’ cultural background, prior knowledge, language, time availability and accessibility needs—without creating filter bubbles or undermining shared interpretation.
The consortium will co-develop hybrid pipelines integrating AI content generation for narrative, visual, interactive and immersive dimensions. GenAI will support multi-layered textual adaptation, scientifically grounded reconstructions, and culturally sensitive storyfication. XR environments and DT models will enable adaptive layouts, personalised gamification and the simulation of visitor flows, sustainability scenarios and climate-related impacts on heritage sites.
Through international staff exchanges across design, AI/XR engineering, communication, social sciences and heritage institutions, the project will experiment with diverse audiences, languages and museum contexts (including university museums and science festivals). It will develop explainable AI tools to visualise how content is generated and referenced, fostering trust and critical awareness.
By integrating technological innovation with participatory co-design, ethics-by-design and policy engagement, the project aims to establish a European framework for trustworthy, adaptive and sustainable digital heritage experiences.
