Objective
Metabolomics is growing rapidly, surpassing 15,000 publications annually. Untargeted LC-MS, the dominant analytical technique, generates thousands of molecular features per experiment, but only a small fraction can be confidently identified, mapped to biochemical pathways, and translated into meaningful biological insight. Limitations in analytical reproducibility and in the coverage and usability of mass spectral libraries lead to misannotations and poor pathway integration, creating significant scientific and economic inefficiencies and hindering the broader adoption of metabolomics in clinical and industrial settings.
TRUST METID project addresses this systemic challenge by integrating advances across three critical domains: signal generation and utilization, computational work towards metabolite identification, and pathway mapping. The project combines investigations on analyte detection in LC-MS with the development of artefact-resistant data processing workflows, improved annotation confidence scoring systems, and robust strategies for biochemical validation and pathway integration.
Through a structured programme of 124 months of international/intersectoral secondments, TRUST METID project brings together academia, industry, and data infrastructure partners to enable knowledge exchange. Researchers will co-develop standards, interoperable tools, and workflows, while contributing to training materials, tutorials, protocols, and community guidelines.
Via international industry-academia collaboration, TRUST METID will contribute in transforming LC-MS metabolomics metabolite identification from a largely fragmented workflow into a mechanistically grounded, reproducible analytical framework, to significantly increase identification confidence, reduce false discoveries, and enhance biological interpretability. The project will deliver lasting impact through open resources, improved databases supporting the reliable translation of metabolomics into real-world applications.
