Objective
Bundibugyo virus disease is driving an unprecedented Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda, exposing major gaps in preparedness, surveillance, diagnostics and medical countermeasures. High mobility, porous borders, insecurity, misinformation and limited community trust delay detection, contact tracing and response, especially in remote forest-interface and cross-border communities. Diagnosis still relies on centralised testing, while no approved vaccines or therapeutics are available for Bundibugyo virus disease.
EBOLA PREP-TBOX+ addresses this challenge by expanding the existing Ebola PREP-TBOX platform into an operational response toolbox for Bundibugyo virus disease and other filovirus threats. The project will strengthen community awareness, risk communication and healthcare worker capacity in high-risk areas; deploy an AI-enabled One Health surveillance system combining community reporting, social media monitoring and local-language terminology; and validate field-deployable molecular diagnostics and in-house PCR assays for Bundibugyo, Sudan, Zaire Ebola and Taï Forest viruses. In parallel, it will advance a broad-spectrum Pan-Ebola equine polyclonal F(ab’)2 therapeutic candidate through antigen optimisation, product generation and neutralisation testing.
By combining community engagement, digital surveillance, decentralised diagnostics and therapeutic validation, EBOLA PREP-TBOX+ will enable earlier outbreak detection, faster confirmation of suspected cases, timely isolation and contact tracing, and stronger public health decision-making. The project will expand diagnostic and therapeutic tools for Ebola outbreaks, strengthen local laboratory and surveillance capacity in affected and at-risk countries, and generate evidence to support future preparedness policies. In the longer term, it will help reduce the burden of filovirus disease in sub-Saharan Africa and build a more resilient and sustainable response system for future Ebola emergencies.
