Empowering Africa's Point of Care with Cutting-edge Graphene Biosensing for Rapid Detection and Interconnected Surveillance of Bundibugyo Virus Disease

Objective

"This proposal expands the ongoing EPoCA project (GA 101145795) under the HORIZON-JU-GH-EDCTP3 emergency fast-track mechanism to address this diagnostic bottleneck directly. The consortium will re-engineer, validate, and deploy its graphene field-effect transistor (BioGFET) point-of-care platform — previously developed for Zaire ebolavirus — to detect BVD (Bundinbugyo) at decentralized health facilities in DRC and Uganda. The technical approach combines adapted single-layer GFET sensor substrates with BVD-specific bioreceptors, a low-power edge computing reader running local ML inference for signal correction, and the iris360 cloud platform for encrypted real-time epidemiological surveillance.
The 18-month work plan is organized across 8 work packages covering sensor redesign and biofunctionalization (WP3), hardware engineering and field ruggedization (WP4), digital interoperability and AI analytics (WP5), retrospective analytical validation against a 1,000-sample biobank (WP6), and prospective investigational field deployment at active triage sites (WP7). Governance, international coordination with WHO and Africa CDC under the ""One Response"" framework, and exploitation and dissemination complete the structure (WP1, WP2, WP8)."

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
