Software Experiment in the N.C. Production Environment

Objective

The proposed Application Experiment will be conducted by an NC(Numerical Control) manufacturer with five different software development groups and with an EDP centre. The subsidiaries of the Prime User are in turn also 'users' since they develop software for PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) applications. In addition, such 'users' are also involved in the software life cycle during both testing and maintenance phases. Exchange of information and data transmissions cover a strategic importance in the activity of the user.

The Experiment will involve the following activities:

* Adoption of a multimedia hypertext-based, full-life cycle Documentation Support system linked to an inter-office data communication Network, all of this followed by an accurate measurement of the advantages derived from its use.

* Introduction of a Yourdon/DeMarcobased CASE tool, and measurement of its impact on the full Software Life cycle.

* Adoption of new organisational rules and work practices with a comparison being made with previous levels of efficiency, productivity and reliability in the development of software, as well as a measurement of the advantages derived therefrom.

The objectives of such activities are defining and selecting the 'best practice' to be followed -- by the users -- in all future day-by-day software development tasks. As a consequence, only those methods and tools which can be easily integrated into the consolidated company's normal activity will be considered for final adoption.
