Evolutionary Implementation of CASE and ORACLE

Objective

For companies operating in financial services such as insurance companies, information processing is a vital part of their core business. Migration from an old static development environment to a new state-of-the-art environment therefore demands consideration.

In the context of this ESSI programme, a Dutch insurance company -the VVAA Groep B.V.- has the opportunity to start an application experiment on the migration of the complete development process towards the Oracle environment. In so doing, they hope to take a leading position in information processing, leading to greater cost efficiency, a better ability to react fast and flexibly to changing circumstances, and improve time-to-market in the development of new products.

The migration experiment will have an evolutionary character. By testing the use of a Data Access Shell, its designers will try to enable software programs, in both the old and the new environments to be simultaneously operative. The experiment will be closely followed and reviewed by several other insurance companies who will shortly all be facing the need of a migration to a state of the art environment, for one of the most vital parts of their operation
In the experiment software will be developed to convert all the VVAA-data which is stored in separate sequential files to the new Oracle database. Data models for the total VVAA-company are made in order to make a conversion of data which will result in database structures which are interrelated and can serve as the main database for old and new applications. The old applications will be converted by means of the data access-shell (DAS) to make them suitable for communicating with the database instead of the old data structures. The first new application which will be build by means of the Oracle*Case is the new Relation Management System (RMS), the starting point for all future development. The end result should make it possible to use old and new applications with the new Oracle database and should ensure that a gradual migration is possible from old inflexible environment and an old system-development methodology (SDM) to a modern flexible environment.
