Objective
Dietary conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) have recently been discovered to have unprecedented health benefits in terms of protection against cancer, heart disease and obesity. These diet-related diseases contribute significantly to EU health-care costs. To c onfer the potential benefits of CLA to humans, CLA rich foods should be included as part of a balance diet. In human the main dietary sources of CLA are ruminant meat and milk, and the synthesis of CLA in the ruminant animal occurs either directly in the r umen or in the tissue from trans vaccenic acid (TVA) formed in the rumen. Both CLA and TVA result as intermediates products of the biohydrogenation of linolenic and linoleic acid. A distinct microbial population is involved in fatty acid biohydogentation w ithin the rumen. To date the production of CLA and TVA within the rumen has been considered solely from the prospective of bacterial metabolism. The objective of this proposal is to apply genomic technologies to improve our understanding of fatty acid meta bolism in the rumen and to feed this information into an ongoing program on the manipulation of fatty acid metabolism in the rumen aimed at improving the quality of ruminant products.Dr Yanez will be based at Institute of Rural Sciences the University of W ales in the laboratories of Professor Jamie Newbold. The project will be based within the Aberystwyth Rumen Microbiology group (ARM). ARM is a research group within the Aberystwyth BioCentre (ABC).This fellowship will help strengthen the European Resear ch area by creating a permanent linkage between Dr David Yanez the researchers in ARM and Dr Yanez colleagues in Spain the proposal will thus ensure a ¿more abundant and more mobile human resource¿ in its research area. Dr Yanez will benefit from a vibrant research environment based on strong links the local university and research centre.
