The MART (Market for telecommunications-based Applications of Rehabilitation Technology ) study carried out an extensive analysis of how developments in European telecommunications and social policy are likely to affect the diffusion and take-up of applications of telecommunications of special importance for disabled and older people. Recommendations for policy, industry, users and others were produced. The main business dimension relates to the development of products and services for the emerging Information Society that meet the needs of disabled and older people. This sector represents a large and growing proportion of the population - about 20% of the EU population now (approx. 80 million people) and expected to rise to more than 25% over the next 10 to 15 years. There are two main ways in which industry can capitalize on this market for Information Society-related products and services. First, by paying attention to the design needs of these groups (especially by adhering to "design for all" principles), industry can ensure that this large segment of the market is not excluded because they find general-purpose equipment and services inaccessible. Second, by developing products and services of special relevance to some of these groups (e.g. telecare services), new markets can be created and serviced.
