Numerical Investigation of the Active Flow Control of Jets

Objective

The modification of global characteristics of conventional free jets with the objective of affecting flow direction, cross-stream spreading and mixing is of a considerable interest becuase of the relevance to a number of engineering applications, including thrust vectoring, improved combustion and reduced noise pollution. In this project the numerical approach will be used for further development of a recently proposed method of active flow control relying on an interaction between a primary jet and a smal l-scaled high frequency control jet. The main goal is the derivation of a 'simplified' computational model, capable to reduce significantly the enormous computational effort required by the fully resolved simulation approach. Such simplification is highly desirable for an efficient numerical investigation and for the incorporation of the numerical simulation approach in future improvments of the control method. Emphasis will also be put on clarifying the basic physical mechanism lying in the base of this ac tive contol method, i.e. on the interaction between a primary jet an a localized disturbance of large amplitude.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
