Objective
We propose to put quantitative constraints on hierarchical galaxy formation models, by determining the ages and the detailed chemical compositions of the largest sample of galaxy data available nowadays, and to correlate those properties with galaxy enviro nment. The size of the sample ensures statistically significant results. The determination of the ages and chemical abundances will be performed with up-to-date stellar population models, that allow for the first time to quantify the two key properties of the galaxy stellar populations, that are: a) the fraction of truly young stars; b) the relative proportions of chemical elements like magnesium and iron, that are the key to understand the past history of star formation. With our approach we are in the pos ition at constraining the global star formation history of galaxies. This is a very important goal, since the understanding of the baryonic component of galaxies is the biggest challenge to modern models of galaxy formation. Therefore the results achieve d with the present project are expected to provide a strong push forward to these theories and to our understanding of the cosmological formation of structures in the Universe.
