Furan and lignin based resins as eco-friendly and durable solutions for wood preservation, panel, board and design products

Final Report Summary - ECOBINDERS (Furan and lignin based resins as eco-friendly and durable solutions for wood preservation, panel, board and design products)

The aim of the 'Furan and lignin based resins as eco-friendly and sustainable solutions or durable wood, panel & board and design products' project (Ecobinders) was to develop novel environmentally friendly binders derived from natural raw materials, more specifically, lignins and furan resins. This SME-driven project aimed at developing solutions that can be implemented in the market.

For this reason, the Ecobinders project was fundamentally application driven. The Ecobinders project was divided into 11 subprojects, that have been selected based on a clearly identified market demand and anticipated technical feasibility. These 11 projects have been clustered into:

- raw aterial development
- solid wood modification (application group 1)
- panel & board products (application group 2) and
three-dimensional (3D) products (application group 3).

The Ecobinders project resulted in the development of a new range of natural binders, both thermoplastic as thermosetting. These binders are available in large quantities and can be used in several applications such as wood industry (durable wood for decking, furniture, window frames…), fire resistant doors and panels, insulating panels, decking and flooring panels, roof and wall shingles and electrical compounds to name a few.
