ADVANCED SAFER SOLVENTS FOR INNOVATIVE INDUSTRIAL ECO-PROCESSING

Objective

SOLVSAFE is a solvent innovation platform aimed at providing European SMEs with cutting-edge scientific knowledge, to introduced radical industrial process changes with the following environmental and saregy goals: 1) 50-100 % reduction in the number and q uantity of hazardous solvents utilized 2) a 70% reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds emissions to the atmosphere 3) a 60% decrease of CO2 emissions 4) a 40% increase in the quantity of renewable materials utilized 5) to reduce solvent concentrations in production sites below the Occupational Exposure Level with no need of high-cost abatement technologies. To fulfil these objectives, fundamental research and development in 1) neoteric solvents 2) non.conventional non-toxic solvents 3) solvents from renew able feedstocks 4) water-based processes 5) innovative synthetic stratefies; and 6) recently discovered bio-tech methodologies will be applied to a wide variety of industrial processes resulting in breakthrough innovations in 5 different industrial sectors : 1) Manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients 2) Production of Biofuels and its By-products 3) Production of Agrochemicals and Crop Protection Products 4) Oil Seed Extraction; and 5) Manufacture of Solvents. EU legislation concerning the protection of air; water, and human health against hazardous chemical substances will alarmingly restric the use of existing solvents by 2010. This is due to: 1) Important sources of VOC in air which, in turn, are precursors of toxic tropospheric ozone 2) Pollutants in natural bodies of water; and 3) Toxic for human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need in Europe for industrial safer solvents. SOLVSAFE addresses on of major problems of European industry through multi-sector approaches involving solvents manufact urers, suppliers, and end-users with a potential impact over 2.200.000 metric tones of solvents used in the EU annually and 10 millions persons employed that manufacture or use solvents

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

FP6-2003-NMP-SME-3

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
