BABEL: A MULTI - LANGUAGE DATABASE

Objective

Scientific development in the area of speech input/output is dependent on the quality and quantity of recorded speech material available for training and testing systems. It is vital for the success of European efforts in speech technology that speech databases be produced according to carefully defined standards, with high priority given to re-usability. Within the EU, considerable progress has been made through initiatives such as the ESPRIT SAM project and the work of groups such as COCOSDA. The proposers in the present project believe that as speech scientists in Central and Eastern Europe become more closely associated with their colleagues in Western Europe, it is vital that speech database standards should not be allowed to diversify.

The BABEL project will train and equip a number of non-EU speech research laboratories to use existing EU speech database standards. Researchers from the Central and Eastern European partner institutions (including Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Romania) will spend some time working in Western partners' laboratories in France, Germany and UK, while Western specialists with experience in speech database research will attend project meetings and advise on practice and policy. It is hoped that specialists from other institutions representing other languages will become associated with the BABEL group on a non-funded basis, and there will be at least one public workshop which speech specialists from other countries will be invited to attend.

This is an area in which speech science and computer science work closely together. The project team brings together a wide range of expertise in speech science and technology, and a number of the most important languages of Central and Eastern Europe. This team will produce a database of high scientific quality that will be used for many years in the development of European speech technology, and will help to continue the development of standards as technology evolves.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
