Objective
We have previously shown that the burden of brain diseases in Europe is 35 per cent of the burden of all diseases. In a current project the costs of brain disorders in Europe are estimated and this proposal suggests a next step: analysis of the funding of brain research (neuroscience) in Europe. The size and allocation of the funding for neuroscience shall be analysed in Europe. Both private funding and public funding will be analysed and divided into categories according to function or disease target. A comparison of the results shall be made across countries within Europe, as with the USA and Japan. Furthermore, the projects tains an assessment of the potential benefits of further funding efforts for neuroscience in Europe in relation to costs. Several methods for testing this shall be used, and results from a currently running project on the eomic burden of brain diseases in Europe shall be used for comparison. The results from the assessments shall be compared with studies performed in other research areas and indicate the best possible use of funding allocation for research in Europe in future. These kinds of studies are missing in Europe, and hence this project shall be a pioneering project in an area receiving more and more attention both in the research community as well as in policy discussions in the European setting.
