This projects seeks the development of simulation software for the predication of material degradation by underpaint and confined zone corrosion for specific mechanisms of degradation. The specific mechanisms will be initially selected based on an evalua tion of exiting empirical data on atmospheric degradation of materials; however, these mechanisms will be fine tuned by fundamental experimental studies into the rate limiting physical and chemical processes, and ab initio quantum mechanical studies of t he metal / oxide / polymer interphase. The results of the modeling will be validated by empirical data on an industrial scale presented in the form of a mechanistic data base for coated products.
