Soft Lithography Technology

Objective

Recently the USA has invested substantial research funds in soft lithography technology (SoLiTech) such as micro contact printing (µCP) with the result of a sharp increase in the number of high quality scientific publications in this key technology area. First attempts were made to apply this technology in commercial products. In the EU, however, there are few research projects and publications in this area or attempts to apply µCP in products, compared to the USA, especially in areas relevant for biotechnology or biomedicine Therefore, a need exists for Europe to close this scientific and technological gap. Soft lithography is a key interdisciplinary technology bringing together materials science and biology.

The Institute of Materials Science and Technology (IMT), the host, at the Uni Jena aims to form a nucleus of the new European research area SoLiTech. SoLiTech will develop this technology applied to surfaces used in biomedicine and biotechnology in the EU. Through SoLiTech, the IMT will be lifted to an international competitive and leading level in Europe in the area of µCP and will help to close the existing technological gap to the USA in this area of technology.

To lift the expertise of the IMT within SoLiTech to an international leading level, transfer of knowledge (TOK) in three of a total of five working packages is needed. The key innovative and unique concept employed in SoLiTech is to establish a consistent chain of competence in SoLiTech composed of innovative stamp preform preparation, stamp preparation, syntheses of tailored inks, functionalisation of biomaterials surfaces, surface characterisation and dissemination of results. SoLiTech shall make µCP transferable to commercial implant and biotechnological products. Through TOK within the framework of the Marie Curie programme the IMT will become the core a leading European Centre of excellence. The RTD capacity of the IMT will be sustainable increased in a new emerging break through technology.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
