Objective
The project "FIRST LOOK" aims at constituting of a new European research area which is located in a niche between the engineering of scientific satellites and the utilisation of the same satellites. The research in this field will provide techniques and methods for the in-orbit identification of scientific satellites in order to provide tools for an improved and optimal utilisation of scientific space missions.
The establishment of the new research area needs the transfer of knowledge from the engineers building the satellites as well as from the user community. The objective is the transfer of knowledge from research institutes which have experience in the utilisation of scientific satellites. The host is experienced in the engineering and design of satellites sub-systems and completes the required experience. The project follows the transfer of knowledge development scheme by establishing a new research field which is unique in Europe and has a single counterpart in the USA which is a partner within the transfer of knowledge project.
The involvement of this partner is a major benefit to the project since it enables the transfer of fresh and unique knowledge from the currently launched and operating fundamental physics mission Gravity Probe B. The result of the project will be general techniques for the in-orbit identification of scientific satellites. In addition, a new research area will be established which is a contribution to maintain and enhance the leading European position in space science and research at the international level.
