Objective
The MOTET project combines two major strategic tasks:
1.) Transfer of expertise from the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) centre in Frankfurt, currently one of the largest NMR facilities in Europe, to the newly installed National NMR centres at the University of Birmingham. Such transfer will allow the development of strong links between the two partners, including exchange of post-doctoral research fellows.
2.) Task 1 will be integrated in a combined scientific project that develops novel technologies to study the key molecular processes involved in the formation of cancer.
Two approaches will be pursued: Firstly, direct interactions between a protein involved in cancer formation and selected inhibitors (with potential chemo-preventive value) will be investigated using well-established biological and NMR technologies, of which Frankfurt is a world leader. Secondly, NMR-based metabolomics will be developed as a new technique to characterise the metabolic response of living cells to several protein inhibitors, in particular to assess their ability to halt cancer progression with minimal metabolic side effects. The combined research will necessitate the development of new NMR techniques and software for metabolic profiling.
