FLEXIBLE AND DISTANCE LEARNING THROUGH TELEMATICS NETWORKS: A CASE FOR TEACHING ENGLISH

Objective

The main goals of this project are to establish a R&D Telematic Network and to develop and implement a complex framework for using the new information and communication technologies in flexible and distance learning.

The first group of tasks have to include investigating informational and operational issues as well as the rights and responsibilities of the participants for the maintenance of the project network. Practical results include guide-lines, supporting materials and local institutional dissemination of specific information for the use of the Telematic Research Networks (TRN).

The second task cluster is related to the development of the structure of a common project database (PDB) and the choice of appropriate for the TRN database Management Software (DBMSW). Creating the PDB and access procedures and creating an Electronic Catalogue (EC) of information resources across the Internet, WWW and existing specialised BBS related to the project are included as technical tasks, but at the same time there is lot of research connected with them, especially about the effective procedures for monitoring and updating the PDB and the EC in a network environment.

The core of the project is devoted to the methods and techniques for flexible and distance learning. The main goal is to develop Pedagogical framework (PF) for teleteaching in individual and group mode. The development of conceptual model for flexible and distance learning system (FDLS), using telematic networks and the tasks for creating methods and techniques for courseware development, with respect to different instructional approaches and distance delivery methods are the scientific output. Practical results are connected with elaborating guide-lines and instructor manuals for courseware development and implementation of the framework in training and courseware development intensive courses with teachers and instructors. Together with the development of the PF the development of appropriate software toolbox is very important. It starts with benchmark evaluation of existing software tools and shells, which are supporting the course development and delivery at a distance are necessary, because of the existing big variety of the specialised products on the software market. Comparative study on the offered computer conferencing software products and computer mediated techniques for collaborative research and training should help for the right and cost-effective implementation in the framework of the project.

Other practical results of the project are connected with the development of the courses on Communication and Information Technologies (CIT) and English. Course micro-planing, FDLS design and adaptation and the development of the supporting materials are here the major tasks. Course delivery (pilot experiments) and course evaluation are necessary follow-up activities for the course refinement and improvement.
