Advanced intelligent medication - personalized drug dosage concepts to improve quality of life

Objectif

We plan to research and design electronic systems which can help identify the proper conditions under which to apply drug therapy (diagnosis) and which can set the dosage of the medication following objective effectiveness measures (therapy tracking and control).

This electronically supported medication control will
- Improve Quality of Life by enabling medication self-management
- Improve the outcome of diseases by proper and timely reaction
- Reduce mortality and hospitalization days by improving treatment standards
- Reduce costs in the healthcare system by increasing efficiency and tracking quality of care.

We plan research in two key areas:
- A tele-care scenario for Heart Failure Medication Management and
- An emergency tool for Stroke Type Differentiation. An existing research prototype body-worn ECG monitor will be further developed into a mobile system to be used by the Heart Failure patient.

A telemetry solution for connection to the supervising clinic, and a distributed software to provide the clinical supervisors with enriched information will be a step to an autonomous medication management solution that needs only occasional checking and emergency attention, similar to an autopilot in aircraft. In a Stroke emergency outside a hospital, the haemorrhagic or ischemic cause cannot be determined. We propose to set up a prototypical system that could be further developed into a kit for ambulances.

This will analyse the EEG and deliver a 3D map of the brain from high-resolution bioimpedance tomography signals of a Stroke patient to determine if thrombolysis is advisable because a vessel rupture can be ruled out. A trial will prove it's efficiency. We request 6 Marie Curie fellows in a total of 82 months over 3 years, with specialised medical experts (neurology and cardiology), technical experts (EEG and Bioimpedance tomography), and expertise in design and execution of clinical trails.
