Signal processing for optical recording technologies

Objectif

Information technology plays an indispensable role in the quality-of-life of today's society. There is a continuous need for higher storage density in various applications, and with it, the markets of consumer electronics and PCs are expected to expand accordingly. Optical storage is the preferred technology when removable, random-access and high-density storage is required because of its low cost, exchangeability and robustness. The past twenty-five years have witnessed three generations of optical recording, with a stepwise increased capacity that is achieved by breakthroughs in the physics of the optical drive.

This project advocates another route in the run for increased capacity in optical storage: it pursues the way of advanced signal processing which, however, leads to a larger complexity in the electronics. Moore's law, stating that in IC-design the number of transistors doubles every couple of years, offers a golden opportunity in this respect since it in fact demands this increase in signal processing functionality. It is the objective of this project to investigate some potential breakthroughs in signal processing technology. A first aspect is the area of soft-decision bit-detection, which can retrieve much more information from the detected signal waveform.

This extra "soft" information has to be processed in conjunction with error-correction (de-) coding. A second aspect is related to signal processing for holographic data-storage where a book of many 2D-pages of information is recorded as a multitude of interference patterns. The read-out of the recorded data pages is affected by various noise sources, and by bit-blurring through full 3D "intersymbol-interference". This necessitates 3D signal processing, which is quite a new and challenging field of research. In these emerging technology areas, Philips Research needs to reinforce his level of expertise. The current project aims to bridge this knowledge-gap by recruiting two key-experts in these fields.
