Precise and accurate determination of isotope ratios by multi-collector ICP-MS in transient signals: application to chromatographic separations and speciation analysis

Final Activity Report Summary - MC-SPE (Precise and accurate determination of isotope ratios by multi-collector ICP-MS in transient signals: application to chromatographic separations ...)

The main objective of the present Marie Curie reintegration research project was the on-line coupling of separation techniques (i.e. a chromatographic system) with an element-specific detector, named ICP-MS. This new approach will allow to establish with precision the isotope ratio in connection with information related to the chemical species presented in different samples.

This approach will help to establish and understand biogeochemical and environmental cycles and distinguish between sources and potentially sinks of hazardous compounds. Three different application areas were evaluated: mineral dating (Rb-Sr and Nd-Sm geochronology), archaeology (Sr isotope ratios in ancient bones) and food authentification (Sr isotope ratios in Asturian cider to check the origin of the apples used) with good results.
