Objective
The goal of the FACETS project is to create a theoretical and experimental foundation for the practical implementation of novel computing paradigms, which exploit the concepts experimentally observed in the brain. A continuous interaction and scientific exchange between biological experiments, computer modelling and hardware emulations within the project will provide a unique research infrastructure, which will in turn provide an improved insight into the computing principles of the brain. This insight may potentially contribute to an improved understanding of mental disorders in the human brain and help to develop remedies.
The software and hardware systems to be developed in FACETS are expected to serve as flexible future research tools for neuroscience. Such artificial systems will help to reduce the need for experiments carried out with living neural tissue. In order to focus the computational analysis on realistic tasks for this new approach to computing, the benchmark applications for the project will concentrate on computational problems that arise in vision, in particular on problems involving rapidly changing visual input where there is a particular need for novel computational ideas and corresponding circuit designs.
The hardware will be realised as very large-scale VLSI based neural circuits, which emulate substantial fractions of the brain. The proposed circuits will be suited to implement novel computing paradigms radically different from the classical Turing approach, which currently forms the basis of all contemporary IT systems. The new paradigms make use of the massively parallel, complex and ongoing dynamics experimentally observed in brain activity. Consequently a detailed structural (connection pattern, neuronal diversity) and functional (dynamic states of activity, plasticity) characterisation of cortical circuits in-vivo and in-vitro is a prerequisite to establish theoretical models of the computing concepts realised in the brain which can
