Final Activity Report Summary - MODCES (Modelling of complex Earth systems)
We have developed a sophisticated mathematical model for the deformation of the Earth's crust and underlying mantle. We have also developed computer modelling software for use in a range of interesting geological situations such as the collision between two continents, or the subduction of an oceanic plate into the underlying mantle. The novelty of the method is that it allows researchers to study the problems of interest in three dimensions and, in particular, the interactions that exist between the deforming solid Earth and the hydrosphere (the water present at or near the surface of the Earth). These interactions are what gives rise to mountain belts and, more importantly, to the variability in their features.
