Objetivo
INTEGRAL is one of the major astronomical satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA) which provides unprecedented imaging and spectral capability in X- and Gamma-rays. This proposal aims to obtain funding to efficiently work on a series of projects related to INTEGRAL with these main objectives: 1. Detecting the redshifted 2.2 MeV neutron capture nuclear line from a neutron star to constrain its equation of state, 2. imaging supernova remnant SN1006 at hard X-ray energies to determine the dominant X-ray emission mechanism, 3. measuring Gamma-ray polarization fraction and angle of a Gamma-ray burst in the field of view of INTEGRAL, and also constraining the polarization fraction of the Crab nebula, 4. characterizing the effects of radiation damage on SPI (one of the main instruments on INTEGRAL), and 5. characterizing hard X-ray emission properties of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft Gamma-ray repeaters. These objectives will be achieved, within two years, by utilizing a fast and high capacity analysis computer, and with close collaboration with the instrument teams of INTEGRAL. The funding will provide close interaction and collaboration of the scientists at the host and the SPI instrument team. It will also support a graduate student towards a degree. The grant will facilitate a fast and efficient reintegration of the applicant to the host (Sabanci University), it will provide a strong start to his career in the home country, help forming collaborations between scientists in Turkey and other major European countries. It will help to reverse the brain drain, and will contribute to the scientific excellence of EU utilizing a major ESA mission.
