Objective
The objective of the TRUTH project is to develop rescheduling systems that react quickly to changes in machine and staff availability or job priorities and that also provide schedules which can be easily modified with minimum disruption. A key feature of these schedules is that they should be readily understood by users.
Rescheduling systems that react quickly to changes in machine and staff availability or job priorities and that also provide schedules which can be easily modified with minimum disruption have been developed. A key feature of these schedules is that they are readily understood by users. The approach was to:
use truth maintenance systems to keep track of the reasons behind schedules;
develop communication modules which accept incoming information from plant monitoring systems or mainframes;
develop advanced man machine interfaces and self explanation facilities to make the system user friendly.
Two pilot demonstrators have been developed, the first in the area of a tyre factory where rubber, chemical substances and oils are mixed and transformed to obtain finished compounds, and the second is a crew and flight rostering demonstrator.
Early prototypes of the communications modules, the prescheduler, the object oriented database, the constraint based scheduler, the human computer interface and the truth maintenance based dependency analysis system have been developed.
The approach will be to:
- use truth maintenance systems to keep track of the reasons behind schedules
- develop communication modules which accepts incoming information from plant monitoring systems or mainframes
- develop advanced man-machine interfaces and self-explanation facilities to make the system user friendly.

The results will be exploited by software vendors in the consortium as a second-generation generic scheduling tool for factory production and job-shop scheduling in a wide variety of industrial applications, and also in airline schedulers.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
