Objectif
CIREP addresses European industry's crucial need for the availability of reliable and standardised digital representations of components which can be used in an integrated design and manufacturing environment and which will facilitate exchange of manufacturing information, both within and between enterprises, through the complete life cycle of products in which such components are used.
The benefits for European industry will be significant improvements in marketing position for component manufacturers by providing their customers with easily accessible and usable information of quality in forms which will result in significant cost saving for component users.
The work to be undertaken has the following main aims :
- to develop and validate a methodology for defining and modelling the functional and physical characteristics of components, building a formal data model using the EXPRESS language to control the completeness and consistency of component specifications through the complete operational chain from definition to storage, distribution and use.
- building on an existing component database, to create a prototype of standardised component information system (CIS) which implements the above methodology and demonstrates the feasibility of the approach.
- to implement network services for electronic trading of component libraries and to investigate and propose solutions for the problems raised by Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), copyright and fees redistribution which will arise in such an electronic trading environment.
- building on an existing system, to develop a general Component Information Handling System (CIHS) which will allow information from standardised libraries of component information to be integrated into end users' own design and manufacturing environments.
Altogether, these developments will provide a generic IT application to support 'global electronic business' in the field of standardised libraries of component information, the value of which will be demonstrated through real industrial evaluation.
Key issues are the quality of the information and the world-wide adherence to recognised standards by suppliers of component information. CIREP will then assist in the integration of the on-going related efforts of international standardisation in ISO and IEC and will provide valuable input to further the development of the comprehensive standardisation framework for libraries of component information.
A key success factor for the project is to gain wide acceptance of its approach from the whole community including the standardisation organisations, the component manufacturers, the equipment producers and the CAD tool vendors. For this purpose, an Advisory Board, consisting of key representative members of this community will be established at the start of the project as well as a User Group open to any interested organisations.
