AWARENESS AND DISSEMINATION ACTIONS ON QUALTY MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

Objectif

The problem area addressed by project QUID is related to the exploitation of Quality Management (QM) concepts and techniques by European manufacturing SMEs. It is recognised today that quality improvement plays an important role in global company competitiveness improvement. While large European groups have taken up the exploration of the beneficial characteristics of QM or, more recently, TQM (Total QM), SMEs have been lagging behind in making similar steps.

Following the development of Quality approaches and methods, Information Technologies (IT) have been used to implement some aspects of QM. This has provided opportunities for increasing QM up-take in companies by allowing quality expertise to be carried in softwares, by offering a wider scope of possibilities through easy data collection and analysis, and also by reducing implementation costs. These opportunities have not yet been fully exploited.

The up-take of IT-supported Quality Management by European SMEs could be much enhanced by:
- educating management,
- allowing closer links between quality experts, industrial users and IT tool developers,
- providing appropriate IT-based tools,
- providing possibilities for customised solutions at affordable costs.

QUID proposes to increase the impact of existing results on Quality and IT by developing, and validating, awareness and dissemination actions, and by preparing a wide European dissemination of events and supporting material able to:
- sensitise SME management to the benefits of QM supported by IT,
- educate SME personnel and quality consultants to the specificities of Quality and IT.

Three streams of actions will be conducted in the project, they concern:
- the design and the development of awareness,
- tutorial and promotion material based on related SME requirements, RTD project results and state-of-the-art IT,
- the evaluation and improvement of the dissemination approach through seminars and tutorials in 3 EU countries (D,F,UK)
- the preparation of the ground for a Europe-wide dissemination of the developed concepts and material in all the EU member states and in several EU neighbouring countries.

The goal of the proposed actions is to provide awareness and illustrations on Quality Management supported with IT-based tools, in order to support industrial SMEs in implementing quality improvement. Focus will be placed on:
- manufacturing SMEs,
- quality system development and self-assessment,
- quality in production,
- document management and quality reporting,
- quality improvement methods.

The action expects to reach at least 160 SME managers through events to be organised in France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
