Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Carbo Culture’s patented Carbolysis™ reactors convert waste biomass into stable biochar, locking carbon away for centuries and generating renewable energy and carbon credits in the process.
R3 in Finland is the first full-scale automated prototype of our next-generation reactor, building of 10 years of academic research and years of R&D optimisation. R3 will be used to test automated feed and discharge systems, optimizing process parametrization, to get engineering learnings for commercial plant and to run our process continuously. We will also test local feedstocks and validate commercial model of our process. Once testing has been completed, this scalable, modular reactor design will be used in the rollout of commercial facilities. Next we will begin work on our flagship commercial facility C1, which will offer full-scale industrial capacity, reaching 20kt of annual removal.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

At the time of Interim Report for period 1:

D3.1 Completed the design of the plan working with engineering cooperation partner: design includes reactor, ignition system control/monitoring/automation systems, gas analysis, loading/unloading systems as well as associated plant including pipework, valves, thermocouples as well as flare to name the most important ones.

D3.2 Hardware installation slightly delayed but overall commissioning timetable still on track.

Successfully looked at 5 feedstock types (pellets, clean wood chips (several different types of clean wood chips with different size and moisture content) as well as dirty wood chips).

In preparation for commissioning, developed a Standard Operating Procedure aka Testing Matrix Completion.

At Period 2, additionally completed D4.3 D5.1 and D5.2.

However, development work continues at the R&D site beyond the scope of this project.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

We will complete this section in the final report.
