Project description
Greening the production of zinc batteries
Zinc-based batteries offer a green solution for storing energy, but they require critical powder materials to function. The EU-funded SUPERZINC project will develop green processes to produce these locally in Europe. Researchers will use a unique process to produce calcium zincate powder to store electricity employing only water as solvent, as well as producing titanium nitride. This can be combined to produce three composite powders for use in batteries: Zincatin (ZnNi batteries), Zincatair (Zn-Air batteries) and Zincatem (Zn-MnO2 batteries). The objective is to licence out the production technology to other companies to make batteries with a capacity of 3 600 charge/discharge cycles that retain 70% of the cell’s capacity.
Objective
EASYLs patented technology provides green processes to locally produce critical powder materials used in zinc-based batteries. We use a mechanical process to create Calcium Zincate powder (active material that can store electricity), with only water as solvent, and have the know-how for the green production of Titanium Nitride (essential conductive additive). These innovations are combined to produce 3 ready-to-use composite powders - Zincatin (ZnNi batteries), Zincatair (Zn-Air batteries) & Zincatem (Zn-MnO2 batteries). EASYLs production processes for these powder materials and composite powders will be licensed to industrial powder producers and battery manufacturers, respectively. Our current technology has been tested with our team specialized in prototype cells & allows for the production of batteries with a capacity of 1000 charge/discharge cycles while retaining 70% of the cells capacity. We intend to reach 3600 cycles by the end of this project & of 5000 in later generations
