Sustainable rubber for the environment.

Project description

Paving the way to a sustainable rubber revolution

The rubber industry is at a crossroads. The current sources of rubber, derived primarily from natural rubber harvested from rubber trees, have proven unsustainable. This is due to deforestation of tropical rainforests and competition with vital food production. Climate change and environmental hazards further threaten rubber plantations, making more than 50 % of South-East Asia’s plantations potentially non-viable. With this in mind, the EIC-funded NORDIC BIO-RUBBER project aims to revolutionise the industry. By transitioning from fossil fuel-based synthetic rubber to a sustainable bioeconomy, this initiative offers hope for a Europe-based supply chain, reducing dependence on South-East Asia and fostering a more robust economy.

Objective

Current rubber sources are unsustainable. Existing rubber products are derived from natural rubber from the rubber tree. The problem with the source of this rubber is deforestation of tropical rainforest and competition with food production. Rubber plantations are threatened by climate change and are vulnerable to disease and environmental hazards. Almost the entire global supply of natural rubber some 11 million tonnes in 2015 comes from Southeast Asia. Scientists at Edinburghs Botanic Gardens estimated that more than 50% of plantations in the region might not be sustainable. The second source of rubber is synthetic fossil-fuel based rubber. It is mixed with strong chemicals during production. NORDIC BIO-RUBBER facilitates the transition of fossil-centered industry of today to a sustainable bio economy, allowing us to build a Europe based supply chain, decreasing dependencies on Asia for the production of consumer goods, which translates to a more robust economy.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
