Project description
Paving the way for safe augmented reality in the automotive industry
Every 40 seconds, one driver is killed due to smartphone use while driving. Distracted driving causes 1.4 million driver fatalities and over 750 000 serious injuries worldwide each year. Augmented reality (AR) technology can solve this problem. But while AR head-up displays are gaining popularity in cars, they do not meet safety requirements. With this in mind, this EIC-funded Vision - Augmented Reality Windshield Display project will bring to market a newly developed virtual screen that uses polarised light guides and diffractive nanomaterials. The screen is projected up to 50 metres in front of the driver. With a remarkably compact form factor, this innovation is set to accelerate adoption by the automotive industry and significantly enhance driving safety for all.
Objective
Problem: Every 40s 1 driver is killed due to smartphone use while driving. Around the world, distracted driving leads to the death of 1.4 million drivers and +750,000 serious injuries per year.
Solution: Augmented Reality (AR) can greatly improve driving safety. Today, AR Head Up Displays (HUDs) are being used in a growing number of cars. However, most AR HUD products do not meet the industrialisation and optical performance requirements of the automotive industry, and fail to unlock the safety benefits of AR.
Technology: EyeLights are on a mission to make driving safer and more enjoyable. Our patent-protected technology is based on the optimization of light properties through polarised light guides and diffractive nano materials. The result is a revolutionary virtual screen which can be projected up to 50m in front of the driver, with the smallest form factor in the market. This will accelerate the adoption of our technology by the automotive industry and increase driving safety.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
