Precise, Global Temperature Data for a Growing Planet

Project description

High-precision temperature data for water stress detection

Water scarcity, loss of arable land, and climate change pose a global challenge that threatens food security. Water stress, in particular, has a severe impact on crop yields, and inaccurate measurement of water stress leads to unpredictable and low yielding harvests. Additionally, current crop health data is inadequate, resulting in ineffective irrigation practices that consume 70 % of global freshwater. In this context, the EU-funded HiVE project will develop and deploy a uniquely scalable constellation of microsatellites to provide the first high-precision temperature data at the field level, daily and globally. It will enable timely detection of water stress, preventing yield loss and increasing global food production while reducing agricultural water waste and associated CO2 emissions.

Objective

Food security is an urgent global challenge. To feed a population of 10bn by 2050, we must produce 50% more food despite water scarcity, loss of arable land, & climate change. Lack of water (water stress) severely reduces crop yields. The inability to measure water stress accurately leads to unpredictable and low-yielding harvests, impacting the entire food supply chain from farm viability to food prices. Current crop health data is not fit for purpose, leading to ineffective irrigation consuming 70% of global freshwater. ConstellR will provide the first high-precision temperature data at field level, daily & globally from a uniquely scalable constellation of microsatellites (HiVE), enabling water stress detection in time to prevent yield loss. The EIC project will develop & launch an MVP constellation, generating the data required to increase global food production by up to 4%, reduce agricultural water waste by up to 180 gigatons, & avoid up to 94M tons of CO2 emissions.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

CONSTELLR GMBH
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
