Project description
Paving the way for larger wind turbines
Challenges loom large in the realm of offshore wind turbine installation, hindering progress towards a greener future. The current reliance on hydraulic hammers for foundation installation presents mounting difficulties with the introduction of larger wind turbines and increasingly stringent regulations. Urgently needed is an alternative solution that can meet these evolving demands while advancing the deployment of offshore wind energy farms. In this context, the EIC-funded SIMPLE - Simple Installation of MonoPiLEs project has developed Vibrojet, a new installation method. It involves the entire monopile, employing vibration, jetting of soil and creating a fluidised bed within the hollow structure. Backed by deep learning and AI, this system temporarily reduces soil resistance, allowing the massive monopile to gently sink to the target depth under its own weight.
Objective
GBM has developed Vibrojet® as an urgent needed alternative for the hydraulic hammer currently used for installation of offshore wind turbine foundations. Current method has increasingly difficulties to install the much needed larger wind turbines and to comply with stricter regulations.
Vibrojet® involves the whole monopile, including vibrating it, jetting the soil below the monopile, and creating a fluidized bed in the hollow monopile. This process is managed by a control system with a high-tech sensor network based on edge computing concepts using deep learning/ artificial intelligence. Vibrojet® reduces the soil resistance temporarily to such an extent that the huge monopile sinks down silent and gentle to target depth under its own weight.
Vibrojet® is compliant with regulations and able to install the larger wind turbines very effectively - accelerating the roll out of offshore wind energy farms that are needed to enable the EU achieving its shore green deal goals.
