Project description
Improving ostomy care and patient lifestyle
Ostomy systems are used to manage bodily waste after ostomy surgery. Ostoform has developed a new Class I medical technology called FLOWASSIST, which is a hybrid design that combines a non-absorbent material with an absorbent material (hydrocolloid). This design helps to direct stoma output away from the patient’s skin and into the pouch, thereby extending the lifespan of the appliance and protecting the skin for longer periods of time. It also reduces the risk of leaks and skin complications, leading to an improved lifestyle for patients. The EU-funded FlowAssist Pouch project aims to develop the Ostoform Pouch with the same FLOWASSIST technology for the ostomy pouch market.
Objective
Ostoform has developed and patented a new Class I medical technology – FLOWASSIST – by combing a non-absorbent material with an absorbent material (hydrocolloid). The non-absorbent material comprises a flexible spout, positioned beneath the patient’s stoma and is combined with hydrocolloid adhesive to keep the spout in place. This hybrid design directs stoma output away from the patient’s skin and into the pouch. The spout prevents output from being absorbed so the hydrocolloid material does not break down. This means that the appliance lasts for longer, the skin is protected for longer and the risk of leaks and skin complications is significantly reduced.
The Ostoform Seal with FLOWASSIST has been successfully developed and commercialised through the H2020 SME Instrument. Ostoform now plans to develop the Ostoform Pouch with the same FLOWASSIST technology. As the ostomy pouch market is larger than the seal market, the novel pouch will increase market opportunity and company value.
