Project description
Automated system for drug discovery
Automated microscopes and 3D technology are pivotal in applications related to drug discovery. The EIC-funded MEra-Micro Era project leverages patented fluid management technology to facilitate the large-scale culturing, drug application, and staining of 3D tissues. The Mera system uses a fluorescent microscope to monitor the entire procedure in real-time. Employing a specially designed bio-plate, the system introduces a chemical cocktail to mature cells into diverse tissue types, such as liver, heart, or cancerous tissues. The fluid pathway within the system can be adjusted to introduce drugs or stains to batches of multiple tissue types. The automated microscope oversees the entire process in extensive fields or fluorescent modes, and a single unit has the capacity to handle up to 800 microtissues simultaneously.
Objective
Using patented fluid management technologies, the Mera system has the ability to culture, drug & stain 3D tissues on a large scale while monitoring everything in real time, through a fully automated florescent microscope. 3D microtissues are added to a dedicated consumable bio-plate. The plate is then integrated into the main Mera system. A chemical cocktail can be introduced to selected wells on a plate in order to mature the cells into different tissue types such as liver, heart, neuronal or cancer. The fluid pathway can be changed to allow the introduction of a drug or stain to batches of multiple different tissue types. The fluid can then be recirculated, replicating the conditions in the human body where organs interact with each other. The whole process can be monitored using the automated microscope in wide field or florescent modes. The system is modular & scalable, allowing a single unit to run up to 800 microtissues simultaneously.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
