Objetivo
Security is becoming an integral part of strategies and measures implemented by industry and public authorities in order to maintain high standards of personal protection and quality of life. Access control is a key element of any security concept. It is essential that only authorised persons can access specific locations and/or information. Attempts at unauthorised access have to be detected and prevented.
Automated biometric identification systems are increasingly recognised as a means for personal identification based on unique physical characteristics rather than "possession" (ID card) or "knowledge" (PIN code). Amongst existing biometric technologies only face recognition has a realistic potential to work in a remote fashion (several meters distance between person and sensor) under real-time requirements.
The goal of the WABY project is to validate a novel 'walk-by' biometric identification system, realised by a combination of real-time face recognition and hands-free RF card technology. People carrying a proximity card are automatically identified approaching a check-point while a video camera system simultaneously captures an image of the person's face. The highly innovative combination of automated face image verification, and hands-free ID card technology will for the first time realise a convenient and secure access control system.
The WABY access control system will use existing face recognition technology (ZN-Face by ZN GmbH) for still images and face recognition technology (FaceSnap by C-VIS GmbH) for real-time video. An innovative long range RF card reader by Nedap NV will complement the vision technology. Supporting end-users are Rabobank and Schiphol Airport who will run pilot installations and evaluate the system with respect to their needs. The major objectives of the project are: - System design based on a thorough analysis of the user requirements - Integration and upscaling of the key technologies - Two pilot installations at end-user sites, a bank and an international airport. - Trial operation of the pilot systems under realistic everyday conditions. - Dissemination of results and benefits aimed at creating widespread awareness. The product is intended for a market, which has specific technical, ergonomic and financial requirements including airports, banks, office buildings, sport and leisure facilities and safety in public areas.
