Objective
Processes that take place on the surface and in the interior of the Earth are intimately linked to the properties and structure of Earth materials down to the atomic scale. Understanding the relationship between structure, properties and processes is essential for assessing volcanic and seismic hazards, for predicting the long-term evolution of the Earth's atmosphere as well as optimising the search of ore deposits and sources of geothermal energy. Moreover, experimental technologies developed for high pres sure research in Earth sciences are increasingly used in materials science, for example in the synthesis of super-hard materials.
The "Atomic to Global" training programme focuses on studies of the physics and chemistry of Earth materials, with particular emphasis on how structure and interactions at the atomic scale translate to the understanding of bulk properties and global processes. Early stage researchers will conduct research projects under close supervision of internationally acknowledged experts on a broad range of topics using state-of-the-art equipment, and will receive complementary training through academic courses, seminar presentations, weekend seminars, and active participation at national and international conferences. Supervisors will be drawn from the academic staff of Bayerisches Geoinstitut, where research fields cut across traditional disciplines. The "Atomic to Global" training programme will extend over four years, and offer both short-term fellowships (3-12 months) and Ph.D. fellowship s (3 years).
